Saturday, July 31, 2004 @ Party time in Boston
Went to Free Shakespeare on the Common with Mbak Pi, this year it's Much Ado About Nothing. The acting wasn't that great in the beginning, but after the first or second act, everybody picked up. Georgia Hatzis who plays Beatrice is just OK, Jonna Roberts who plays Benedick is actually pretty good.
I was watching Oprah after I got back from work today, apparently at the AIDS benefit auction during Cannes Film Festival, Sultan of Brunei gave $14000 to have a look at Naomi Campbell's navel ring.
........ Wow.
Man. Utd. playing AC Milan tomorrow down in N.J. If I'm still around next year when the U.S. soccer tour is going on, I'll go to at least one of the games. Heaven knows, I'm not going to England to watch them play, and definitely not watching them in action in Malaysia either.
The super plane from Angels and Demons. Bravo Mbak Pi, now we both can sleep soundly!
Tuesday, July 27, 2004 @ Where's the rain...?
Was watching Triplets of Belleville earlier, but I stopped it because it's too bizarre. Not in bad way though. I never finished watching City of God the other day, found it too disturbing. I did watch Cyrano de Bergerac though, and I loved it. Depardieu is brilliant in it :) Went to watch Bourne Supremacy this past weekend, and it was good. Can't wait to see The Village this Friday.
I need to update my song collection.
Sunday, July 25, 2004 @ Shakir's Birthday
Dinner at Namaskar followed by poker at Amir and Usman's place. Cape Cod plan was cancelled because of the rain, which I never saw because I woke up late.
Red Sox beat the Yankees in one of the best games ever apparently. Down by 2 in the 9th inning and then scored a home run.
Muz called, twice this week. Surprise, surprise.
ICC meeting tomorrow at the Islamic Center. I haven't been there at all since I moved out of MU, I feel bad.
Bubbles, Michael Vaughn, Frozen Queen and You Smell Like Butt Bunny.
Saturday, July 24, 2004 @ The DNC and rain-all-week-long week
I bet everyone's looking forward to next week.
Sitting in Diah's room, typing on her computer. I can't sleep, I'm too hyper and I don't know what to do. I could always call home, I guess, but then I figured that's probably gonna set my mom off, me still not sleeping when it's almost 2 a.m.
In high school, whenever we were still up at 3 a.m., Kak Ruby used to sing that
pukul tiga pagi song. There's a lot of stories behind
tiga pagi. That time we were caught having a dorm party and were made running around the school compound and climbing the fence around the tennis court, that happened at a historic 3 a.m.
These two are already "dead" on the bed behind me. What am I going to do?
Thursday, July 22, 2004 @ I can't frown, and I don't know how to bat my eyelashes
Let's say you really like flowers, and someone you really despise give you a beautiful bouquet of flowers, would you keep it or throw it out? What if it's a single flower, but still as beautiful?
I'd keep them, just cause I don't get flowers that often :)
Or better yet, if it's given to me close to Father's or Mother's Day, I'd give it to my parent.
Wednesday, July 21, 2004 @
When I can afford spending a little extravagantly, I'm going to start my own collections of books and socks. A room turned into a small library and a whole drawer or two dedicated to socks. I'll do it, even if it takes me 10-20 years to accomplish it.
Finished reading Bookends. Moving on to Swallows of Kabul. I'm trying to read as many fictions as I can before the summer ends. Hard to believe it's mid-July already. Another 6 weeks before the final year of my undergraduate years begins. Schiit.
I need to get a belt, a watch and a few summer shirts. It's beginning to get really hot and I don't have anything light that doesn't require ironing to wear.
@ Invasion of Diah's room
I put on the subtitle while watching Alias (coz I'm freaking deaf and couldn't hear anything that was being said)and some of the lyrics (of the soundtrack, of course) made me think.
Well, I guess lately a lot of people have been saying things that make me think. Not that I don't usually think, but you know, thinking in the way that when you wake up the next day, or three days after that, the topic still stays in your mind. It's good, but at the same time, it disturbs my sleep. I toss around a lot at night when I have things on my mind. That's usually when I find blogging helps, only this time, a lot of the matters are things I find rather subjective and I'm not a particularly articulate person and often find it rather hard to explain my positions on these sort of things. And having someone who's determined to have their perspectives dominate over others' on the other end doesn't help either :)
It's crazy to think how short our lives really are. I've lived a fourth of my life (that is, if I'm fortunate enough). Two stages of my life has passed, and I'm about to enter the next stage in a few years. It's scary and exciting at the same time. I know everybody goes through it, but I wonder if there is another person out there who feels and thinks exactly the way I do when going through his/her life.
These past two weeks, the topics of marriage and companionship have come up more often than I would have liked them too. I think I'm always going to remain a romantic at heart, but only when it concerns other people. I'm pretty much disillusioned when it comes down to myself. Sure, around me are friends who'd like to meet someone they share a connection and can fall in love with. I don't hope for that, neither do I believe that's ever going to happen to me :) I can live with that, life is much easier when you take a practical approach to it. Don't dare say I'm taking the easier way out.
Finally, finally. We put up the A/C in D's room, and it's just been turned on. Oh, what heaven! From now on, this is going to be our hang out spot. Forget the living room, forget the TV, who needs that when you can lie on the bed and read a good book in cool bliss.
The longer you stay apart, the harder it is to find things to say to each other. You can never quite pick up where you left off.
Monday, July 19, 2004 @ Uneventful weekend
It's so hot, I feel like I could either cry or die.
Finished watching Season Two of Alias.

Take Me Away - Lifehouse
This time
What I want is you
There is no one else
Who can take your place
This time
You burned me with your eyes
You see past all the lies
You take it all away
I've seen it all
And it's never enough
It keeps leaving me needing you
Take me away
Take me away
I've got nothing left to say
Just take me away
I try
To make my way to you
But still I feel so lost
I don't know what else I can do
I've seen it all
And it's never enough
It keeps leaving me needing you
Take me away
Take me away
I've got nothing left to say
Just take me away
Don't give up on me yet
Don't forget who I am
I know I'm not there yet
But don't let me stay here alone
This time
What I want is you
There is no one else
Who can take your place
I've seen it all
And it's never enough
It keeps leaving me needing you
Take me away
Take me away
I've got nothing left to say
Just take me away
Take me away
Take me away
I've got nothing left to say
Just take me away...
Greatest Story Ever Told - Oliver James
Thank you for this moment
I've gotta say how beautiful you are
Of all the hopes and dreams I could have prayed for
Here you are
If I could have one dance forever
I would take you by the hand
Tonight it's you and I together
I'm so glad I'm your man
And if I lived a thousand years
You know I never could explain
The way I lost my heart to you
that day
but if destiny decided I should look the other way
then the world would never know
the greatest story ever told
and did I tell you that I love you
tonight
I don't hear the music
When I'm looking in your eyes
But I feel the rhythm of your body
Close to mine
It's the way we touch, it soothes me
It's the way we'll always be
your kiss your pretty smile
you know i'd die for
oh baby
you're all i need
And if I lived a thousand years
You know I never could explain
The way I lost my heart to you
that day
but if destiny decided I should look the other way
then the world would never know
the greatest story ever told
and did I tell you that I love you
just how much i really need you
did I tell you that I love you
tonight
tonight
And if I lived a thousand years
You know I never could explain
The way I lost my heart to you
that day
but if destiny decided I should look the other way
then the world would never know
the greatest story ever told
and did I tell you that I love you
just how much I really need you
did I tell you that I love you tonight
@ Nothing good lasts forever
I am so screwed, it's 1:30 in the morning, and I'm wide awake. Poor Diah had to listen to me rambling on. I only realized I was torturing her when I turned around to face her and saw her eyes all red and sleepy. My poor D, I'm sorry.
Went to see King Arthur, I don't think it's worth any commenting on. Went to drive around Fellsway, it was nice and cool there. Came home to a very hot house. Ended up lying on Diah's bed in front of the window and boring her to tears.
It almost feel as if today didn't exist.
Saturday, July 17, 2004 @ I can love you more than that
That song is stuck in my head, and I've been humming it the whole night.
Went to Elephant's Walk, it was my first time there. Although the reason for being there was to celebrate Mbak Pi's birthday, we were pretty much the most somber group in the establishment. I have no idea what brought the mood on.
We came home to hung out at Windsor after dinner. D and D let me drove back, it was only my second time driving on the highway, and I'm glad to report that unlike that last time, I managed to not come close to killing anyone :)
We played one round of Cranium and one round of poker. Team Mbak Pi+Nik+Usman won and Team Amir+Diah+Shaq followed far behind :P Usman is actually pretty good at acting, especially as the blowfish.
I don't know which fortune smiled upon me, but tonight seemed destined to be MY poker night. Amir had been challenging me to another game since he killed me in the last one that we played. And tonight, not only did I make Amir fold, I went on to stay till the end. I was playing against Usman, and until the turn, he was ahead of me. But then came the river, and that turned the game around. I won :) It was pretty funny though that it should come down to Usman and I, since we were the least experienced at the table.
It's way past my bedtime and I'm hungry.
Friday, July 16, 2004 @ Life is a perpetual present
Diah told me to write because she wants to read new stories. I wonder what new stories she's talking about, since we live together and she's usually the first one to know about every move that I make.
Watching Sopranos at the Media Center right now while doing data entry for last year.
Went over to Amir and Usman's again last night to bid goodbye to Usman's parents. They're leaving today, going back to Pakistan.
Going to dinner tonight to celebrate Mbak Pi's birthday. Diah's in charge of that, I don't exactly know what's happening or who's coming.
Tomorrow, we're thinking of going to this dog pound place to get a cat. We'll see how that goes.
Thursday, July 15, 2004 @ Dewi's Birthday
Mbak Pi got woken up by sexy morning voices of Diah and mine and to a burning German chocolate cake.
Still looking for a pet kitten, let us know if you know of one up for adoption.
Tuesday, July 13, 2004 @
Nik
b. 1982
bored to death, 2004.
Mbak Pi and I couldn't stop laughing when we saw the ad on tv. It's funny.
The song is 'Greatest Story Ever Told' by Oliver James. Acoustic guitar. Any face would do ;)
Sunday, July 11, 2004 @ When you really really love someone, am I right when I say that you want them near?
Friday night, went singing with D, D and Haruna. That was fun, although they didn't Five for Fighting's 100 Years, and I had so wanted to sing that song.
Usman and his parents entertained us with dinner at their place tonight. I enjoyed their company very much. Then again, when have I ever disliked people who feed me? But seriously, his parents are really nice, I hope we'll see them at least once more before they leave this Friday.
Went out to Boston today with Unaza for a walk. Took the T down to Park Street, walked in Boston Common and the Public Garden, along Charles River to Mass. Ave, across the bridge to MIT, along Mem. Drive to Kendall, took the T to Davis, and then walked all the way home to Windsor. Took some pictures along the way, will put them up soon.
Diah said yes to getting a cat. I'm going to hold her to her words, can't wait for Huzzie to have a friend. He has other friends, but they all live quite far from here. Molly is in Dewi's car and Spotty and Muddy are down in NJ. It would be really nice to have another cat in this house.
I have plastic drawers in my room. The top drawer - where I keep some "beauty" products, all my hair products and other hair-related stuff - smells really nice.
Thursday, July 08, 2004 @ Ginger and Cinnamon
Chocolate cake with ginger and cinnamon, I'd like to try that. Mbak Pi's coconut and ginger ice cream is extremely good.
Just got off the phone with Huma, I miss talking to her. I don't have to make sense when I talk to her, she usually understands pretty well what I'm trying to tell her.
I've put up some of the BBQ pictures, will put up the videos later.
I really like listening to Noori. I like their beat.
Mbak Pi returned her car yesterday, the plates are now sitting on top of the heater in front of the front door. It's sad, really.
I imagine a good book is like a long lost lover. I imagine everyone who loves reading feel the same. When you've found a good book, you don't want to put it down till after you've finished reading it. And when you do, you're disappointed that you've finished it so quickly. I'm really bad at putting books down. My mom stopped buying my brother and I books because we refused to do anything else but read. My friends stopped lending me books once they realized that I was reading under my desk when the teachers were teaching. Talk about not having self-discipline. I'm still nearly as bad as I used to be. I'd stay up late at night just to finish a book no matter what is coming up the next day. Once I bury my nose into a book, I become so absorbed with it that nothing else around me matters. If you're looking for a time to talk shit about me, this will be the perfect moment to do it. I just finished reading Angels and Demons, that's what brought this up.
Monday, July 05, 2004 @ Calling all cranians
Had the BBQ today. Not many people were there, but it was fun. The food was good. Unfortunately, we never officially got to dessert because Usman pulled out his watergun and started chasing everyone around with it.
Waterfight was fun, although we had a small incident. For future events, kids under age should come with letters from their parents absolving us from any negligence. I hope the kid's OK though, and didn't suffer any kind of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Amir, as usual, refused to get wet. We managed to capture his downfall and getaway on videos, so that will go up soon.
Everyone left after the fight, except Dewi, Haruna and Yusuke. They stayed on for dessert and to play Cranium. We managed three rounds of the game, with a half-hour break in the middle to watch the fireworks on tv. I've never seen the July 4th fireworks before, I would have loved to go down watch it from the river. Maybe next year then.
Playing Cranium was so much fun. I'm actually pretty good at charade, so I got to do that while Diah took care of the rest and Dewi kept guessing the answer. We made a pretty good team actually, against the self-proclaimed "Wises".
I still have too much energy left in me to go to sleep. I wish there's someone awake who I can call and talk to.
Sunday, July 04, 2004 @ Memories are wonderful things if you don't have to deal with the past
Went to see Before Sunset yesterday in Harvard Sq. Liked it very much, eventhough Mbak Pi and I missed the beginning by a few minutes. Had dinner at Penang, hadn't gone there for the longest time. It seemed like the place isn't doing so well anymore. After dinner, D and D and I went to walk around in Harvard Sq. We ended up walking all the way by and across the river to Harvard Business School. It was a really nice night, and I enjoyed spending time with the company I had.
Went shopping today. I felt bad, because I had originally planned to go over to Kak Aida's place for the
solat hajat. However, I ended up in Burlington Mall and Super Stop n Shop instead. Bad Nik.
Tried making
sate and
kuah kacang for the BBQ tomorrow. The chicken is still marinating in the fridge, and we had a little bit of a problem with the
kuah kacang. First, I discovered that my mom had given me an incomplete recipe, and then the peanuts were too chunky and had to be crushed smaller, and then the thing turned out white instead of brown, and at the end, it was sour instead of spicy. Lets just say it took me quite a while to make it turned out decent. I just hope I don't kill anyone tomorrow.
Che Na and family is back in Kota Bharu for visiting. Apparently they're staying at our house, and so did my grandmother and Che Yah last night. That has never happened before, because our old house was always too small for guests. But the new house has a lot of rooms, and since most of my siblings are away at schools and colleges, my parents can have about as many guests as they want over at the house.
I don't remember many of my dreams. The earliest one that I can recall was when I had a fever and was sleeping with my parents. I must have been really young then, between 4-6 years old. In my dream I saw a wooden toy caterpillar (the kind that had wheels so you can drag it around behind you) and it was moving over clouds. I remember having my eyes opened but still able to see the caterpillar. The next one that I can still recall was of my brother turning into a robot. I think that one must have been brought about from watching Edward Scissorhand. In that dream, I saw a door opened in a corner of the room I was sharing with my brothers and the maid (I think we still had a maid at that time, cause there were only four of us), and my younger brother came out all covered with pieces of metal. That was a really scary dream. It seems silly now, but it really scared me when I was a kid. Now, I just don't dream much, neither pleasant nor disturbing dreams.
Friday, July 02, 2004 @ Tum kahaan, hum kahaan
I should get up and get ready. Diah says Mbak Pi is coming home early to go grocery shopping, and I want to go with her.
Called home this morning, to ask my mom for
kuah satay recipe for the BBQ this weekend. Talked to my brother, who's home from school for a few days. He's sitting for PMR this year, and I really hope he'll do well. He's not an exceptionally smart and sharp kid, but he's always working hard, so hopefully that will help get him where he deserves to be.
Huma and Muz left yesterday after visiting for a few days. It was nice having them around again, even for a short time. I wish I could have spent more time with Huma, somehow things weren't as they used to be between us, I'm not sure what was missing. But I guess everything IS different now.
Went over to Usman's place yesterday to borrow some rice. Ended up staying for almost an hour talking with his parents and Amir. It was easier this time around to talk to his dad. I felt bad that we only came to get something and didn't bring them anything. That's not how we do things back home.
@ Reasons not to mess with a child
A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.
The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.
The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah".
The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?"
The little girl replied, "Then you ask him".
****************************************************
A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work.
As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.
The girl replied, "I'm drawing God."
The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like."
Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."
***********************************
One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.
She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?"
Her mother replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white."
The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then
said, "Momma, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?"
********************************
The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture.
"Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.'
A small voice at the back of the room rang out, "And there's the teacher, she's dead."
***************************************
A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.."
"Yes," the class said.
"Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?"
A little fellow shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."
**********************************
The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples.
The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:
"Take only ONE. God is watching."
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chipcookies.
A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."
Forwarded to the MalaysianBoston yahoo group a while ago.
@ End of first summer session
It's horrible, I can't keep my eyes open. There's nothing to do today at work, I think I'm just going to go home in 15 minutes, eventhough I'm supposed to be here till 8pm. It's so slow here, I just can't take it anymore.
