What to do when you have a fish bone stuck in your throat. Make a ball of rice and swallow it. Apparently it's the same cure in Bangladesh as it is at home.
I guess a lot of people are having their halloween party tonight. I was seriously considering wearing my costume to work, but nah. Farz is a cat. And Lee is a Superman, he makes a cute Superman too, that guy is hot ;)
Temperature's in the 60's, weird, but nice.
One more midterm coming up this week, bunch of readings to do. I had to lead class discussion with Jess, it didn't go very well. I'm really bad at leading discussions, I just don't know where to take them to. People just come up with things to say, and I don't know how to tie things together so they would fall nicely into place. Bleh.
Haven't talked to Huma for ages (translate - two weeks). Haven't talked to Anand for eons (translate - probably since before school started). I really have to figure out the deal with my cell.
Ikut hati, I would probably just throw it out, terminate my contract, and be done with it. But it's not the most economically efficient thing to do. So I guess I have to pay for a new cell, and wait till the contract's done in January before I'll finally be able to give up the cell for good. I hate being too accessible. I've been enjoying my life without a cell. It's creepy how much technology controls you.
Mbak Pi's leaving soon. I'm going to miss her. Sometimes I really feel like I'm not given enough time with certain people. How I got to know them, became close, and then, it ended. They had to leave, and that's the end of it (I suck at long distance relationship, I really don't know how to keep in touch with people).
Why is that? You would think that since I've lived almost half of my life away from home, I'd be so good at writing and keeping in touch. I'm not. Forget friends, I don't even write to my own family. Sure I send cards for birthdays, and for
hari raya if I'm being good, but that's the extend of it. I'm not the kind of person who's good at telling stories. That's what letters are, they're stories about things that happen. I remember reading letters that Marlyne sent to D and D last winter, they were amazing. I wish I can write like that. To be able to put into words what you experience, and being able to relay it to other people so they can appreciate it too, that's an amazing gift. Unfortunately, I have yet to discover it in myself.

Just got back from the Halloween party at Haruna's place. It's fun, met some new interesting people. Everybody had to come in costume - I was a sorceress, with blue hair. I've been wanting that blue hair for so long, so tonight I got my wish. It was a potluck too, so I made tiramisu for dessert. Took me three tries to get it "right". The first one didn't turn out the way it should, it was dry and the cream became hard. The second one wasn't bad, only a little dry, but I made enough to feed only 3 people. The third and last one, which I made with the help of Mbak Pi, was acceptable and fed all 11 of us :)
Going to bed, wake up early tomorrow to go to Wordsworth in Harvard Sq. Stacy said they're going out of business, so we're going to check out the sales that they have.
I haven't been helping out much with the iftar, I feel bad.
Thursday, October 28, 2004 @ Red Sox did it!
They did it, won the game and reversed the curse, after 86 years. They rewrite history tonight (at least baseball history), and it's nice to be here, be part of the atmosphere and enjoying the celebration. Although, the kids here are not as loud tonight as they were the other day, when Sox won the AL. Maybe it's because the cops acted faster tonight, blocking cars from entering the quad, and some of the people on foot even turned back when they saw the cops. I wonder what it's like on the quad right now, but it's probably not safe to go there by myself. If only D and Raonaak are here like the other day. I guess the celebration's going to continue for a while. If only there are fireworks - that would make tonight perfect.
I guess I better go take a picture of the "Reverse the Curse" sign before they change it. Everytime I go on Storrow I always want to do that, but I keep forgetting. Last Sunday, they arranged the lights in Prudential to spell out "Go Sox", which was pretty cool, but unfortunately none of us had a camera on us. That would have been an amazing shot.
I think I've forgotten how to make new friends. I got to know someone yesterday, who I would like to get to know better, and be good friends with, but... I realized I'm not sure how to go about doing it. Hmmph.
Had a midterm today, which went pretty OK until the last 5 minutes, when I realized there's another page of questions at the back that I hadn't discovered before. I did the best I could, but I don't think it was enough. Sucks!
Lower back pain and a night of tossing and turning to look forward to. Oh, what fun!
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 @ Parents are really angels in disguise
Again, today, I was reminded of how genuinely selfless and generous our parents are. For a mother to go through 9 months of physical and emotional trial, of knowing your child might not survive, and even if he/she does, might not be perfect like every other child, of knowing how her life is going to drastically change after the arrival of the child, is still something I cannot fanthom. For a father to give up everything to make sure his wife and child receive the very best attention, of sacrificing time with his other children to make sure that he can spend it with the one who needs him most, to run from work to the hospital to home within a few hours, is something not just anyone would do.
Bringing a child into the world is a tremendous responsibility. Bringing a special child into the world is a lifetime commitment and an incredible act of love. It's no easy feat. My brother has down-syndrome, and even I don't always have the patience in dealing with him. But when I look at my parents, I feel so humbled, and realize how selfish I am being. I always pray, that God will give me the time to care for my parents as they have cared for me, the time for me to repay them in kind, and love.
And now, I am also praying for this family that I know. May God give them enough faith, love and strength to see them through, and may they all be reunited soon, in the blessing of God. And for the little girl who has been blessed with such amazing parents, and who is a blessing to her parents herself, Welcome to the world. May it be kind to you, and let you be the person you're meant to be.

The flowers she sent arrived today, with a note that lets me know just how lucky I am to have her. This is one of the best surprises ever :)
Monday, October 18, 2004 @ Update
Ortiz hit a home run, ended the game after 5 hours and 2 minutes. Couldn't have hit it at the end of 9th innning and saved us the trouble of staying up, could he? It must be crazy in Boston right now.
@
Here's one reason why you should never start watching any Sox game - when you do, your eyes end up glued to the TV and you can never leave the couch till the game is over, which is 4 hours later.
10th inning now. This is so intense. Rafeya meant to take a shower more than half an hour ago - she's now still sitting on her bed in her bathrobe, biting the end of her sleeve. She's vying for Yankees though.
This house is so quite. Last year, whenever there's a game, you could hear Zaid and his friends cheering and yelling and jumping and what not downstairs. Nothing this year. Not a tweet from the guys. I'm just so glad the girls here are really nice and easy to live with.
Cooked for iftar yesterday. I had made fun of Muz because his tandoori was pink instead of red. But yesterday, I panicked for a moment thinking that my chicken tandoori would suffer the same fate. I took the chicken out of the fridge, after being marinated overnight, and they were bright pink. They turned out brown after baked. Still not red, but hey, better brown than bright pink.
Danyal brought haleem today. I didn't think I'd have haleem for another year. It's so good, I wish I can learn how to make it. People have been telling us it's so hard, I'm thinking that you probably can't learn how to make it unless you live with a Desi family.
Top of 11th inning now. 2 out.
Commentator: I don't think it'll be a productive day in Boston tomorrow."
No kidding.

My birthday. Thanks to all the well-wishers and the party-planners for the wonderful memories. This has been one of the best birthdays of my life.
On the other hand, it's been a really rough day. Had an exam today, so I was studying for it late last night and early this morning. Didn't go as well as I had hoped, too bad *sigh* On top of that, I also had a problem set due, which I spent hours and days working on. It's been a real long day, I'm glad it's over.
Career's fair tomorrow, I had hoped to go, but I'm so not prepared.

Just finished watching Celebrity Poker, first game of Tournament 4. It came down to Matthew Perry and Michael Vartan in the end. They were both really good players, I don't think either of them made any big mistakes throughout the whole game. In the end, Matthew Perry won, but Michael Vartan is still the cuter of the two.
Went hiking up Mount Monadnock today, up in New Hamshire, with Diah, Dewi and Haruna. The weather was amazing. We took the most direct route to the top, so it was really steep. And rocky. But the view was spectacular. Didn't really get all the way up to the peak, because we had to come back early. There were so many people there, apparently it's the second most climbed mountain in the world (?). It really took me quite an effort to hike up the mountain, but there were these two guys we saw who kept going up and down the trail like it was a walk in the park. Took us 4.5 hours to go up and down, and in the same time those guys had already gone up 2-3 times. It's crazy. We asked one of the guys why he's doing it, and he's like, "I get bored at home, there's nothing to do." And he's from Lowell, Mass. too. I thought it's kinda insane, but he looked like he's having fun. Oh, well. To each his own potion.
I posted some pics on the side (Nabe's).

Can't stop smiling. These sweet and thoughtful friends of mine threw a surprise birthday party for me. I didn't have any idea of what's going on, I almost spoilt it. We were supposed to go out to Cheesecake Factory and have dinner with Safi, since he's leaving tomorrow for India and is gonna be gone for 4 months. I planned for
that, telling everybody to meet up at D and D's place at 7:30pm. Without any idea that there's another plan on the side.
Somebody covered my shift at work today, at the last minute. I decided to go out to Harvard Sq., did some window shopping. Coming back, I went directly to Windsor without going home first. I was 15 minutes early. I saw Shaq's car, and I thought "Hmm.. Shaq's early, but he's usually the first one to show up anyway, so.. OK." Then I saw Amir's car, and I thought, "That's a bit weird, Amir's usually 15 minutes late." Then I saw Siju sitting on the stairs outside. And I thought, "I didn't tell Siju about this dinner, so Afsan must have told her." I asked Siju what she's doing, and she said she's on the phone and since the reception's bad inside, she came out. I'm like, "OK, I'm gonna go in first then." By this time, I should have at least suspected that there's something going on. Even Usman has full reception at Windsor. But I was tired from my outing, and just went right on in.
I went up the stairs, and was greeted with the usual "Happy Birthday to you...." Almost everybody was there - Afsan, Amir, Dewi I, Dewi II, Diah, Haruna, Neel, Nida, Shakir, Siju, Taiwo, Zaid. Safi and Unaza showed up soon after. There were streamers, ballons and a Happy-Birthday banner. Food and cake. Cards and gifts. It was a real birthday party :)
I was really surprised, and touched. I didn't expect anything, and felt like I had been given more than I deserved. I thank God for giving me the chance to know these people and for making them part of my life. In their own way, they all have made a difference in my life and myself. May Allah bless them and myself and give us all a chance to make change for the better in each other.
D and D, I love you two so very much. Thank you for everything.
Thursday, October 07, 2004 @ Class is cancelled
Perfect, should give me more time to finish this ridiculously tedious assignment that I have.
I've never been to a Halloween party, so I really want to go to one this year. And I'm really determined to be blue-haired. I have my source, who's gonna look into getting me a free wig. Most excellent, really. Only, I can't think of anyone with blue hair other than Japanese anime characters and Marge from the Simpsons. Any suggestion? I'm really excited about this.
Forgot to e-mail the inventory back to the Treasury, I hope they're not mad. Maybe Zaid had a chance to do it, it totally slipped my mind.
And oh, I saw "the Kid" today. I've been wondering about him lately, and today there he was, at the Media Center talking to Stacy. He's grown since I last saw him, doesn't look much like a kid anymore. Aawwh.
I've decided to dump my previous crush (it's hopeless anyway, he already has a girlfriend) and took up a new one. This one has a really weird last name, has a "bad boy" look to him, and has really beautiful eyes. And he's a Libran too, born Oct 6, unfortunately a few years younger than me. Too bad *sigh* He's such a charmer. I know, I know, you should never trust one, but still... *another sigh*
Wednesday, October 06, 2004 @ O Captain, my Captain!
It's cold today. Contrary to what I wrote before, the heater's still not on. I've kept my windows closed, so it's still bearable. I doubt for long though.
They did the fire drill today. Good thing it's the last one this semester, hopefully nobody will trip the alarm this year. I, for one, certainly don't look forward to freezing my ass off in the cold.

Desmond Tutu: Instead of bombs, you should export your compassion and generosity.
Jon Stewart: We do that, we just put everything in the bombs.
How cute.
PMR starts today. My brother's sitting for it, I pray he does well. He's changed so much in the past 3 years. He's only 15, and he's 100 times better the person I am. Wise beyond his years. Definitely one of my parents' favourite, he's such a good kid. He deserves success, and so much more.
Sometimes I resent having people in my room when I'm trying to do work. I can't focus when I have to "entertain". I also can't tell people to leave my room. Last year I used to run to Huma's room whenever there's someone in my room I'd like to get rid of. Can't do that anymore *sigh*
The water turned brown today. We turned all the taps on till the water ran clear, took almost half of the day. What a waste. Same thing happened a few times last year, and I've no doubt it will happen again.
According to Rafeya, they've turned the heat on. About time too. We went downstairs the other day when it got really cold to try to figure out how to turn on the heater, but failed to find anything. I was considering calling Usman to do us the service, but fortunately, that is no longer necessary.
Monday, October 04, 2004 @ I think...
Seth Meyers is cute in a Hugh-Grant kind a way.
This past weekend has been extremely weird. Full of the unexpected. In a good way though, since everything turned out pretty well.
Michael Vartan is in Game 1 of Tournament 4. Sure ain't gonna miss that one.
Sunday, October 03, 2004 @ When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however impossible, must be the truth - Sherlock Holmes
Muz is here in Boston, he came in today just in time to join us bowling.
I'm in need of a good cry. The urge to do so has been building up for a while - tonight it just feels stronger than usual. My eyes watered a few times tonight, I just happened to be in the presence of others and wasn't comfortable to let it all out. I can't go on feeling depressed for no reason forever, so I do hope to let out the tears soon.
Went bowling, to Dhaba for dinner, and to Windsor to play poker. I wasn't in my poker mood, was glad to be out of it (this is not an excuse, I promise). Did something really stupid, felt really bad.
It was nice to hang out with the old gang again. It felt right.
Who do you imagine will find you if you die in your sleep? I don't think anyone will notice me till I start to smell. Depressing as shit.
Starting to get pop-ups on my computer, what happened?

Huma's here, in Boston. She came in late last night.
Lodge trip was cancelled. Planning on going bowling instead tomorrow.
Just got back to my room, I've been out all day today, since 9:30 this morning. Spent most of the day finishing my homework. Then, went to Haruna's place with D and D to celebrate Yusuke's birthday.
Had great fun at Haruna's. There were the triplet of D's, Haruna, Rishi, Yusuke and I. We had salad, sushi and chicken wings for dinner. I really enjoyed the sushi :) Dessert was brownie and ice-cream, yummy. All throughout dinner and afterwards, everyone kept trying to figure out how the Simpson bottle opener that we got Yusuke work. It was hilarious, I've never seen a group of adults being so captivated over a mere bottle opener. We played "Pits". The goal was to get +200 points, and I managed to lose big time by accumulating -140 points. At least now I know I should never try to be a stock trader.
It was really nice hanging out with a different crowd for a change. Different attitude, interest, and atmosphere. I got to let my guard down a little tonight, and I'm really glad. Looking forward to tomorrow, going bowling with the MSA crowd and the closest friends. Too bad Muz can't join us this weekend, but maybe he'll be able to come hiking with us next week.

Food poisoning today, from consuming old milk. Horrible, disgusting. I missed a class. I still feel weird. And I'm extremely hungry since I couldn't keep down anything I ate, which wasn't much in the first place, an apple and a bowl of cereal. Waiting for Rafeya to come back from class so we can order food together.
Lodge trip is tomorrow. I'm not sure how many people are actually coming. I pray that there will be at least 2 people who will be driving their own cars. I hope it won't come down to me driving the van. That would be kinda suicidal, I think.
Date line for schools to register international students in SEVIS is tomorrow. JPA still hasn't paid my tuition, which means, I have balance of almost $19000 on my bursar, which puts me on bursar hold, which doesn't allow me to add classes, which leaves me registered with only one credit, which makes my status appear as "part-time", which means they won't be able to register me in SEVIS, which leads to violation of my immigration status, which can potentially puts me in trouble with USCIS. We're speaking in terms of worst case scenarios here. Which usually never happens. I just have to go down and ask them to put the balance aside, they know JPA always pays, only really late.
PMR's next week.
